If you get an iPhone from the Apple Store, you pay $199 (8 gigabyte) or 2
$299 (16 gigabyte).
You have to sign the contract in store, so you have to pay your first month's payment.
Then, you have to pay the contract early termination fee, which is $175. Then, you can unlock the phone.
Of course, you can buy it somewhere else, and there will be no first month/early termination fee to pay. You can just unlock instantly.
Good luck finding an iPhone!
