New iMac Pro, doing a fresh install. My 400gb iTunes library from Mojave is on an external SSD. I have read that I am to point to an .itl file when choosing my library but the most recent is 12 months old even though I update the library every day. How do I get this sucker working?

Not certain about Mojave, but suspect it is the same as older versions of MacOS. The .itl file default location would be in the iTunes folder inside the Music folder on your system disk. When you put your media on an external disk, the .itl file will remain in the default location unless you manually move it to the external disk. I found this out the hard way a number of years ago by starting iTunes when the external disk was not available. This confused iTunes, since the library file was available on the System disk but the actual media couldn't be found. It caused the library to become corrupted which was a pain to fix.

Anyway, have you looked in the default location for the .itl file? Unless you moved it to your external SSD, it is probably on the System disk.

Thanks. I checked and there is an .itl file there. It was last modified 5 years ago. I modify my library almost every day.

IF ANYONE KNOWS WHY THE iTunes LIBRARY IS GREYED OUT? Is it a permissions thing? Apple support left me hanging today with "you need to reformat your external hard drive and copy your library over again." As if that will help. Strange thing is, on my older iMAc, when I try to "Choose new library" and point it to my current library on the external it is still GREYED OUT. Although iTunes works, it seems if I pointed somewhere else, I would not be able to point it back again.
