Question about jailbreaking from 3.0.1 to 3.1

Currently I have 3.0.1 jailbroken but have a question about 3.1. When 3.1 comes out and I have to jailbreak it to that firmware, how is my iphone affected? I have modded my iphone's home screen, icons, themes etc. and have apps I have paid/downloaded from Cydia. Is everything kept the same or do I backup everything with a program Cydia program? Thanks

jus download aptbackup from cydia and it will back all your stuff from cydia

To be honest its always better to do a clean jailbreak rather than try and restore from a backup. That way at least you won't run into any problems. Recustomising your phone afterwards might be a pain (depending on how overboard you've gone) but its cleaner.
