Question about keeping movies on ATV

Ok so this is the issues I am having...

I have a 250gb ATV I want to put all my movies on it however I do not want to keep them in my iTunes library on my MacBook Air... so what I am trying to do is somehow load all the movies I have so far from iTunes to ATV then delete them off my computer.. the problem I am having is as soon as ATV syncs it erases everything off of it..

is there a way to do this? because I am at capacity with my MBA with space

the custom sync option doesnt work for me either..

Also I have noticed that when I purchase a movie through the ATV after it syncs with my MBA it shows up twice on my ATV

Syncing to your Apple TV

You can't have files on the Apple TV that are not on the master iTunes computer. I have a 250 GB Apple TV also. I ended up buying an old Mac G4 on eBay to use as an iTunes server. I upgraded the disk controller card to support large drives and I added a 250 GB drive. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but my experience is you can have more songs and movies on your primary iTunes computer than your Apple TV but not the converse. That is to say you can mark stuff to be downloaded to the Apple TV but if there is a file on the Apple TV and you remove the corresponding file from the master iTune computer, the first time you connect to the Apple TV, the Apple TV will erase the file. That's just the way it works. I hope I didn't make this too confusing.

Can't you just sync all of your movies with iTunes and your aTV. When that has completed, change the settings on iTunes to manually sync the media you choose, and just don't sync your videos in the future.

I recommend you backup your movies!

An external USB drive is also a good option, although requires some software modifications.
