Is it possible for me to put my thumb drive icon in my dock and not have it showing on my desktop? I just tried it and it allows me to place my thumb drive in my dock but it still shows up on my desktop. Then, if I eject my thumb drive from the desktop is obviously cannot find the same flash drive that I placed into my dock.

I hoped that all made sense.

Mmmm, if you go to finder preferences (general tab), you can select what kinds of items show up on the desktop. There are only three categories -- hard disks, cds/dvds/iPods, and servers. I'm guessing it falls in the second category, although this means you'll wipe out visibility of the other things in that category on the desktop too. As for the link you placed in the dock, well, it should work when the drive is plugged in and mounted -- but if you remove it from the desktop by ejecting it, it will get unmounted. Which is not what you want.

So if you really need it to work (be mounted) but not on the desktop, try unchecking one/more of those three options in Finder's preferences.

If you go into Finder --> Preferences, you can uncheck the option to show CDs, DVDs and iPods on the Desktop. If you have drag the iPod to the right side of the Dock, it should stay there. If you eject the iPod and click on the Dock icon, you'll get a question mark. But remounting the iPod will allow you to access it again through the iPod Dock.

Is this what you're trying to do? It seems a bit awkward to me to access the iPod and eject it, etc. this way, but maybe it'll work for you.

Edit: mkrishnan beat me to the punch...
