On my Sony now I can just tap the touchpad with one finger to click on anything, I don't actually have to press the button at the bottom of the touchpad.

I know out of the box (and in the Apple Store) MacBook's and MacBook Pro's cannot do this but is there a setting you can change to enable this or software you can download to enable this?

System preferences > keyboard & mouse > trackpad

enable "trackpad gestures - clicking"

Great. If there wasn't a way to do that I could have had a major problem. I always found it a little inconvenient using the actual button when i use them in the Apple Store. That could have made me reconsider my MBP purchase which is only a few days away (Saturday)

I'm with JBlack on this one. I'm not a big fan of the MBP touchpad button. I always tap the touchpad when I'm not using an external mouse.

do you only have one finger?

Maybe it's laziness but it's more comfortable to not have to click with your thumb. I find that doing it with my thumb requires hitting the button with the side of my thumb which doesn't feel comfortable or natural at all. Maybe non-ergonomic is the word...

wouldnt call it a major problem though lol, maybe if the os was in a language you couldnt understand or if the screen was upside down or as formentioned having one finger.

Tapping in Bootcamp Vista

Does anyone know how to turn this tapping/clicking feature on in XP/Vista while in bootcamp? It seems the only way to click is by actually pressing the button..

I prefer pressing the button. I often find I tap the trackpad by mistake (although OSX offers "ignore accidental trackpad input") and so on.

It really used to annoy me because I'd click on a dock icon and accidently drag it off the dock and it would vanish. Then I'd spend the next 5 minutes trying to remember what I just deleted off the dock.

Thankfully the hack Deeper allows you to lock the dock so I don't have this problem anymore.

You need to go into the control panel and check out the options for the "mouse"/"track pad" and make sure you have it activated.

If you have it activated, then you need to make sure you have the right drivers installed.

Go learn to do this, then come back to the trackpad. You won't be complaining any more. Hit the button as if you were playing slap bass.
