Question about macbook to TV

Hi, I think I'm going to buy a macbook pretty soon and I was wondering if using the macbook as a apple tv by connecting it to a tv with Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter which is s-video would be the same as just using the apple tv? Is there a big difference in quality?
