Hey Guys,

My MBP should be arriving TOMORROW!!! I currently have a Powerbook G4 and am thinking about using the Migration Assistant when I get the new computer.

Here's my question. I have lots of junk on this computer because I've downloaded lots of shareware/freeware programs to try out. When you install some programs, it installs little files all over your computer. If I use the MA, will it just basically copy everything from this computer to the new one? I have iLife 05, but iLife 06 comes with the MBP. If i use the MA, will it overwrite the newer versions of the program?

I have a huge external hard drive. Would I be better to copy my whole home folder to the external hard drive and copy only the files I want?

Thanks!
Jason

Migration assistant will not overwrite iLife 06 with iLife 05.

MA basically sends everything over, kind of cloning the hard drive.

You can boot the powerbook g4 into target disk mode and drag over only what you want.

Migration assistant will transfer over all the passwords and bookmarks and everything else.
It's really convenient. :)

I tried it recently and didn't like the migration assistant. The install felt...messy. I reinstalled a clean OS on the new computer and will transfer by hand via target disc mode the items that I want.
