Question about new Apple TV

I realize the new Apple TV will be streaming all my content from my iTunes. I have a 27" iMac, so will the the computer always need to be "awake" with the monitor on to be able to stream?

I don't know about you but when I watch a movie, I like it to be dark. So I definitely wouldn't want my computer monitor on.
 
The computer has to be awake, as the movie is stored on the internal HDD and the HDD needs to be spinning to play the movie and a sleeping Mac does not spin the internal or external HDDs. Also the Mac has to be awake to be recognised in the network.
You can shut off the display via SHIFT+OPTION/ALT+EJECT.

I knew that it had to be awake because the stuff was stored on my hard drive. I just didn't know if there was anyway to turn the monitor off without putting the computer to sleep.

so all 4 buttons will turn off my monitor?(shift+option/alt+eject)

Thats awesome, I didn't know I could just turn off the monitor. I was starting to lean towards the old Apple TV so I could store stuff on the hard drive. But now I am back to getting the new Apple TV.

I just remembered, you can also set an Active Screen Corner in System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces > Exposé to turn off the display.

Oh yea I forgot all about that. I will change my settings from sleeping going to the bottom left to putting the display to sleep.
 
Likewise, you can change the sleep settings of the CPU and Display independently of each other in energy saver prefs. You can just set the display to sleep after say 1 minute, and set the CPU to never.

Although for your purposes, the hot corner might be the easiest and quickest.
 
G5 1.8 PPC and Apple TV

Does anyone know if I will have any issues using my PPC G5 with ATV2? I ask because I can not update the operating system past 10.5.8. I'm hoping its just itunes that can be updated and not an OS update. I have a MBP too but the monster storage is on the G5 and it's always on.

after a quick glance at the Atv requirements it looks like you need itunes 10, I know that you can run itunes 10 on 10.5 so it is possible.

Currently, when you purchase it you have 30 days to watch it.

Once you hit the play button, you have 24 hours to watch it.

As for the new Apple TV, we do not know if it you still have the 30 day purchase window.

The old Apple TV downloads the whole movie if you don't begin to watch immediately. Until later this week, we don't know what the new Apple TV does or how much internal flash storage it has.

My guess is that it will still have the 30 day window to begin play.
