Question about old ipod touch and adding apps/games

So i have a pretty old ipod touch got it right around when they first came out either in 08 or 09. i have the app store and just gave it the most recent update, but whenever i try to download an app or game it never works and usually tells me i need an iphone update. is there anyway to search for apps the are compatible with older ipod touch's or update my ipod to work with newer apps? Thanks
