Question about port #s

I need to choose a free port for something game-related. I will then unblock it on my firewall.

How do I determine:

a) What ports are free for me to use?

b) What ports are SAFE for me to unblock?

(My hardware firewall is kind of a pain so I may wish to leave this port open all the time.)

I take it I should use something in the 49152 to 65535 range, which Wikipedia says "no ports can be officially registered" in?

I don't think it really matters. I've used all kinds of radmon 5 digit ports and never had a problem.
