Question about replacement imac

I purchased my first Mac, a 20” C2D imac, from Amazon in September, and it had the buzzing sound that some other people have complained about, it also would only burn DVD at 2X speed. Apple agreed to replace it, and had me send them the imac. Apple then sent me a refurbished imac in a brown box, and this imac has a different serial number then my first one. The letter they sent me stated that Apple was going to provide me with a replacement unit.
Is this normal Apple policy to replace a new computer with a refurbished one?

I would be okay if they had repaired my imac and returned it in the original box. I just do not feel it is right to replace a new computer with a refurbished one that Apple sells at a discount. Also without the original box I can not even send it back to Amazon.

A refurbished computer is one that has been repaired. Had they returned your original computer, it too would have been "refurbished". I believe Apple has the right to repair or replace it at their option. You may want to call Apple to say that they should have replaced it with a new machine. I am not sure I agree about the box. I wouldn't return a repaired machine to Amazon as though it were new. Others may disagree.

The real point, though, is how is this replacement machine working?
