i just got my iMac and i was woindering.....with safari is there any sort of button i can click to open a new tab?? is there no way to open a tab without using a keyboard shortcut, go to the file menu or command-click.........??

you can either commant+t for new tab or right click with your mouse right next to your first tab and create new tab that way. when you right click with your mouse , it will say "create new" or "new" or something like that.

All the other suggestions are good ones (and to be honest, what I use). There *is* however a new tab button.

Right click or ctrl-click on top of one of the existing buttons (the back/forth, the reload, etc). Select customize toolbar from the menu. Drag the new tab button wherever you want it. Done. :)

This is what it looks like:

That button seems to be missing from Safari 3 beta. I had checked the customize toolbar menu before I gave the OP my suggestion. I could have sworn there was a new tab button as you have shown.

odd.

Eep, sorry. I do have Stand installed. I didn't realize that's where the button comes from. Stand is excellent and worth getting anyway. It does some cool things, the most cool of which to me is to force new windows into new tabs (like in Firefox).
