Question about sparsebundle disk images

So it was my understanding that a sparsebundle disk image is just an encrypted disk partition up to a max capacity that you specify. But, I figured that disk image would be tied to the original disk it was created on.

So how am I able to transfer an encrypted sparsebundle on my Mac to an external drive and view it on another Mac? Is the disk image somehow transferred to the external drive when copying. Please explain how this works.

Once unmounted you can just send it any way possible. It is not tied the disk, as long as the password is entered correctly it will mount on any other mac.

So it's more of a password protected folder than an actual disk partition of the disk it was created on originally?

Yes, it's encrypted with either 128 or 256bit AES , and then mounted. Once unmounted you can do what you want with it. While mounted you can add or subtract items. Unmount it and move to an external drive or email it. Encryption is optional but I would suggest it.

While mounted it is a Volume of the disk , unmounted it is a specialized DMG file.

Cool, thanks for the info. Yes, all of my sparsebundles are encrypted. Perfect way to stash sensitive data files that you don't want anyone to gain access to.
