I can't seem to find this answer, but my question is will steam be bringing these games in OS X native code or will it be stinking Cider ports.

I honestly have no love for cider ports. They're not the best at frame rates, they don't always get sound and network connections right.

Personally I would love to see cider die and have lazy developpers get off their arses and code games natively.

PS.
Before you lock this, consider this a question about Porting and not Steam in general. Not rejoicing that steam is coming to OS X. It's a legit question about a legit concern

I am afraid that OS X is no use for serious gaming. So Steam for Mac is very unlikely.

If you want Steam, tell Mr Jobs to get his head out of his own arse and start supporting DirectX.

hahaha ... considering the news today, I'm afraid you need to take your own advice :D

oh gawwwd. don't tell me... they are releasing Steam for Mac? Seriously? I feel somewhat foolish. I never thought it would happen without DirectX support.

Steam announced for the Mac today AND Source will now be written in DX and OpenGL.

Thank you!

This gives me great joy.

I will finally enjoy gaming the way it's meant.

This is why I love Blizzard, because they make native games, now I can enoy Steam games too.

Finally we're no longer second rate computer users, whe it comes to gaming.

Although I dislike Steam and its onerous DRM this could be handy if they could make a variety of older games, I'm thinking the last 10 years old to run on ur Mac. Like say the original Aliens vs Predator. Ok, I'm dreaming.:)

The question is what will the variety of games be? I see no reason to play new games on Steam unless they make me (thinking Half Life 2 Episodes). And will this open up new formerly PC only games to the Mac? I admit that would be a positive, but I also admit I don't know how they will achieve that.

^^Pain though DRM is Steam still beats most other forms and has an offline mode. Ubiosoft anyone? or Securom.

Where have you been?

But yea. It's been announced they're using OpenGL so these will be non-cider ports. Bad side to all this is the OpenGL drivers in the current public OSX version is quite poor to say the least. So now it's down to Apple to take a step up.

Heck I don't expect them to sort out Dragon Age ... and I own that on Mac and PC already ...

Aren't they updating OpenGL in the next build of OS X? I seem to recall reading of changes to it.

Wow are you behind the times. We have known about Steam Mac for 1-2 weeks.

No ability to transfer game ownership. I like being able to sell games when I'm done with them. I use Steam on the PC when I'm forced to, but I much prefer to install a game independent of this service if I can. I do admit it's a good method of meeting up with others if you are going to game online, but you pay for the right to do so.

We know the Valve games will be native. The bigger question is: will all games be native?

Will they allow developers to publish cider ports, or native only?

I really, really, *really* hope they'll only accept native games.

However I'm pretty sure they're going to allow cider ports, and 99% of the games on Steam for Mac will be terrible ports.

About 50 readers would stick their fingers in their ears and hum "lalalalalalala" if they were hearing, instead of reading this. ;) I don't think terrible ports will help Steam on Mac in the long run. So will they really allow that to happen?

nah they wont come out with terrible ports now that they are really think of the macs as a large market. if they come out wit part ports, they wont sell. i am sure they'd have considered it

I am a bit bummed by the news.... I mean I just did a bootcamp install on my iMac (27 inch i7 with no problems direct from vendor). I think 75% of my reasoning was to play things that will now finally be released for mac. Oh well, I can also play Torchlight and some other games.... and I can play them now :)

Of course that also includes anything you buy on Impulse, Direct2Drive, GamersGate, GameTree Online, Good Old Games, etc ... not to mention anything by Ubisoft and more and more games that use GfWL ...

my only hope is that this finally means that Mac games will be released in europe at the same time as they are released in the US, instead of this 4 month delay we have on certain titles.

I agree, but it's still an onerous standard if you like the ability to sell used games. Some games I keep forever, like HL2, but here have been several occasions where I was so happy I could sell a title that I did not like. Some companies offer a set number of activations and even that is much better for resale, because it makes resale possible.
