Ok I haven't got an apple TV but I have been converting my dvd's and am getting ready for it. I have a question regarding streaming though.

My PC with my library held on it will be upstairs in a bedroom. The PC is on most of the time and it is connected to my wireless network so everything there is fine.

The apple tv will be in the living room next to the router. I was intending on having the apple tv setup wirelessly too. Can anyone tell me how good the streaming is? I do not want to get it and have stuttering streaming or waiting a while for a file to play. I could connect the apple tv to the router via an ethernet cable but I don't know if this would help since the PC holding the library is still connecting wirelessly?

Also, what will it be like when I am browsing the library? Is it fast ot will I notice lag when streaming the library?

Its going to be on a PC as I have most of my files on that anyway and the PC is always on but I want to know how good it will be for streaming. I am using the router I got from Sky Broadband if that is of help to anyone?

Cheers :D

I just got an atv the other day, I have a thread a few spots down where I was having trouble with excessive stuttering (well, any stuttering is excessive)--once I did something (not sure what exactly fixed it) it has worked flawlessly. I have an exclusive n network.

if I connected the mac wired to the router, but the PC would still be connecting wirelessly would this reduce any possible streaming issues? Would it make a substantial difference to having the apple tv connecting wirelessly and the mac also wireless?

If you can make anything wired then by all means do it. I have had nothing but frustration with wireless when it comes to the :apple:TV. Don't even get me started on the connection bars...

The weak link will always be the wireless link. If the link from the PC to the router is 100% then you should probably be fine.

Also, what will it be like when I am browsing the library? Is it fast ot will I notice lag when streaming the library?

In the 1.x firmware, the AppleTV loads all of the metadata from the remote library when you connect to that source, so browsing the library is instantaneous, regardless of connection speed, wireless vs. wired, etc. For browsing, the local network speed only affects how long it takes to transfer this information on the initial connection.

Streaming of standard definition material is reasonably acceptable on most networks, but there are huge variations in configuration and setup on home networks that make it impossible to predict. For streaming of high definition material, a direct wired ethernet connection is very strongly recommended.

Thanks for the helpful posts guys, just trying to get everything sorted before I go and buy one!
