Question about the Dock

I was in the Apple store yesterday and noticed that the Docks on their demo machines behave differently from mine.

In the Apple store, when you hover your mouse across an icon in the Dock, it gets larger. If you move your mouse to another icon, the previous one shrinks back to its original size and the new one you're hovering over is now larger.

Obviously this is prettier than it sounds. LOL

Anyway, I see the Dock Preferences and I've got Magnification turned on. But, it still doesn't animate the resizing of those Dock icons when I hover my mouse over them.

There's a magnification slider in the System Prefs panel too. My guess is you've got yours set on minimum. If you increase it, you can adjust the amount of magnification to something more noticable.

No, it's on and set for about 3/4 of its possible magnification.

Still, the icons aren't animated when my mouse moves across them.

Sounds like they have some sort of hack installed for that. If what you are describing is true, it is not an integrated feature of any released version of OS X, AFAIK. Why don't you ask them? That's what they're there for!

P.S. Am I the only one who just now realized that you can suppress dock icon bounces on launch from an option in system preferences?

Dock magnification has been an included feature on OS X since at least version 10.2 (when I joined the party).

Try setting your magnifcation all the way up and your "Dock Size" all the way down. Surely you'll see something.

This has been a feature since 10.0.

I take this talk of "animation" to mean the animated nature of the built-in dock magnification. The dock icons don't immediately become larger when magnification is turned on. It's an animated process.

No... I think the original poster was simply talking about magnification as he mentioned nothing about animation:

Mine randomly decided to stop magnifying a while ago. A dual restart did the job (that's the only time It's really played up...)

Mmm, I'm well aware of the existance of mag, although I don't care for it. the OP clearly indicated that he/she has magnification on, has an adequate level of magnification set, and does not get what he/she believes was seen at the Apple Store.

I'm not saying that the OP is not on crack. In fact, that's my dominant hypothesis. But my recessive hypothesis is that he/she actually saw something that the Dock does not do by default that was enabled by a hack.

Try relaunching the dock.

Yeah, its little things like this that slightly spoil the "Mac Experience". This happened on my MacBook. A restart did the job.
