New user to Mac (still haven't bought) but probably will be later this year.

I'm interested in the new 15.3" MacBook Air that was announced yesterday at WWDC. I just had a quick question regarding doing anything in full screen view. When you go full screen, I'm assuming that the toolbar area still does not fill in and just remains black? If so, (for example using the 15.3" model), when in full screen, you wouldn't be getting the full 15.3" view then, correct? If so, that kinda sucks and seems a bit misleading to me. I guess it's not a deal breaker or anything, but still seems a bit sketch to me.

Also, how big is the toolbar area? 1/4", 1/2", etc?

Thanks

When you go full screen on a MacBook, the toolbar indeed disappears and the screen area behind the notch remains black. However, the screen size is measured diagonally from corner to corner, not including the toolbar area, so you're still getting the full 15.3" viewable area as advertised. As for the toolbar's size, it's hard to pin an exact measurement since it adjusts based on resolution and user settings, but it's usually less than 1/2".

First things first. What do you mean by toolbar? If you mean the menubar, it can be visible in full screen or it can hide and display when you mouse up. That's a preference settings.

Sorry, I meant menu bar lol (remember I'm REALLY new to Mac) haha. I'm talking about like watching a movie or something. From what I'm seeing on YouTube, the very top of the screen is not used in full mode (it's black).

Oh really? So the measurement doesn't include the menu bar/toolbar (whatever it's called)? Very interesting, I learn something knew everyday on here!

Movies have a different aspect ratio than the screen anyway, even without the part used by the menu bar, there will be black bars on the top and the bottom (unless you are watching 4:3 or vertical phones videos).

I think you will find the best answers to this question on YouTube. Here is one:

The only time I ever think about "the notch" (a phrase I'm tired of hearing/reading just because it's an annoying phrase) is when people ask if it bugs me and then I remember it's even there. That's how much you should fret about it. It's a small black area where you normally wouldn't have used the screen anyway before the notch was a thing. People who are complaining about it being there are quite literally complaining about something that has been there since the beginning. It's just that the usable space around it wasn't there.

Honestly, don't listen to anyone who acts like a little black camera assembly ruins the experience somehow. This is one of the biggest non-issues I've ever heard people complain about when it comes to Apple products.

How is that? If I put YouTube in full screen on my Windows laptop it's full screen.

Yea I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to get educated before I purchase, is all. The notch doesn't bother me at all, I'm use to it on my iPhone.

I'm not a fan of the notch, but it's a worthy trade-off for the significantly thinner bezels. Older MacBook bezels without the notch look gigantic and dated to me now. Personally, from a functionality stand point, I don't even notice it. It's more of an aesthetics issue than anything else.
