Question about the new mail

I have never used mail in the past, mainly because it doesn't include the same kind of 'push' notifications as you get on iOS (IE a badge on the app when it's not in use.)

So what I use at the moment is a safari extension that has a live preview of how many unread emails I have. My question is, does the new mail support a similar feature? I don't like having to open the app every time just to check my email, i'd like it to check automatically for me like on the iPhone, and display an unread badge on the app icon.

No, not if you quit Mail. But why you'd want to quit Mail is beyond me...

Just open it and close the window (don't quit it) and then it will act as your expect it to and it's been that way since 10.0.

Don't see the big deal?

I set mail to open whenever I turn my Mac on, then I leave it running in the dock. Mail isn't a big drain on resource hog or anything.

I understand that, but it's a minor inconvenience to have it open and then close the window. I dunno, I like the way it's done on the iPhone where you can set it to check a certain time period and not have to open it. It's more convenient.

Close the window then; the unread message count will still show in the dock. You have to open/close the Mail app in iOS every time you want to read new mail as well. You cannot read your e-mail without opening some kind of application either in iOS or OS X. You can set Mail.app's poll time in Mail's preferences.

Yes you have to open the mail app on iphone whenever you want to read mail, but it checks for new emails in the background without having to open it. Could anyone answer my question though? Does mail do this on lion?

There is no appreciable difference in performance between having e-mails pushed to your phone and having Mail.app polling the server every once in a while. If you refuse to understand this, you are likely to be disappointed in desktop mail clients for the forseeable future.

I do understand! I'm just asking a simple question about mail in lion, it doesn't mean I don't understand...

Well to answer your question again:

In OS X (from 10.0) Mail will automatically check for mail every so often. Leave the application open and close the window. The icon for Mail will be updated as to how many unread messages you have.

That's essentially what is happening on the iPhone anyway. Also, when you want to check mail on OS X, it's just the creation of a window versus starting Mail.

Why don't you do this?

You put mail in the startup items but you check the hide option next to it and boom, Mail stays in the background retrieving emails just like in iOS...

I just hope its not too much like the iPad version. From the web page I cannot see any display of the folders on the left side... I like my three pane view!
