Question about transitioning from iphoto to photos app

Hi, have a few quick questions about transitioning from iphotos to photos app.

Is there something in the new photos app to allow just local syncing if I don't want to use iCloud? Right now photo syncing has been a mess since Yosemite/iOS 8. I have duplicates in my phone and all. I'm hoping photos fixes that. so i have two questions:

1) Right now when I plug my phone into computer iPhoto pops up and I choose to import my pictures into my library. Is this an option in photos? how to i get pictures from my iphone onto mac without enabling icloud sync?
2)Will photos import my old library from iPhoto which contains my old synced photos?

You don't have to sync everything to iCloud.

You can keep Photo Stream going without syncing the whole shebang. So new photos from your phone *should* appear in Photos.

Otherwise it probably still supports USB import like iPhoto did.

I have a question regarding iPhoto to Photos transition and its in regard to Photo stream. In iPhoto i could delete photos in photo stream and it wouldnt delete them in my photos.
But in Photos app if i go to delete pictures in My photo stream they also get deleted in photos. I regularly "Purge" photo stream so i get space back on my iOS devices and to keep it clean, how can i do that in Photos app?

You’re right. Photo Stream doesn’t seem to import your Photo Stream pictures anymore and thus removes the local copies along with your Photo Stream. Needs to be reported, that would be a seriously annoying issue.

Also a funny thing i noticed, if i delete a picture in photo stream from my ios devices they get deleted in photo stream on mac in but retain in local photos as it should be, so there is something here.

This is completely unrelated, but has anyone tried to create a new slideshow or viewed one of their previous slideshows and checked out the music options? I was forced to use one of the pre-recorded music files in the previous version of iPhoto, but in Photos, I can only use the music associated with the theme. I an not select iTunes - it tells to open iTunes for the list to be populated, but even after I opened iTunes, I can not see anything there. I've attached a screenshot to show you what I see. I have Photos opened in front with iTunes opened behind it. I'm not sure why Apple is not allowing us to use our own music for slideshows, but maybe I am not doing something correctly.

But it's also obvious that Photos is nearing release within the coming months, and like iTunes Match it simply isn't reliable and likely won't ever be.

Thank you for your most illuminating response. Everyone understands what you wrote as being the case for beta software, but as was noted in my original post, the last version of iPhoto also exhibited this behavior. My question was not directed solely at this behavior, but towards other users of the new Photos app that may have also experienced this issue, in an attempt to solicit any corrective action for same. My hope was that Apple had actually corrected the issue and not simply passed it on to the new Photos app. Have you even tried Photos and/or have anything substantive to share with the rest of us?

While I appreciate any and all responses, those like yours do not contribute anything to the conversation. Perhaps if you had actually read my post more carefully, you could have provided a proper response.

I can use all the music that's in my itunes collection, so something's going wrong with your install

Thanks for your response. I was also having this issue with the last version of iPhoto. Were I to take the drastic step of "nuking and paving" (a Windows term, meaning a clean install), I would be able to download OS X 10.10.3 again, correct?

Also, a point of clarification is needed. When you mentioned an issue with install, did you mean with the install of Photos or 10.10.3?

Yeah, that's what I feared. As this behavior was exhibited with the last version of iPhoto, there may be an issue with my iPhoto/converted Photos library. I can always copy out the pics and vids and recreate the library, once 10.10.3 and Photos is reloaded.

Thanks for your input. I'll weigh my options, complete a course of action, and let y'all know the outcome.

Wow, I decided to create a new Photos library, import a few pics, then create a new slideshow. Photos exhibited the exact same behavior - I still can't use iTunes as a source for music. At this point, I think I'll just perform a nuke and pave with Yosemite, re-download 10.10.3, then try it again. I don't understand why this particular behavior is occurring, but if this action fails to work, I'll report back and see if anyone has a different solution.

The opposite seems to be true on iOS. iOS doesn’t seem to import streamed pictures at all, which makes this bug even more annoying. When you remove your local copy in Photos, it will thus be removed from Photo Stream and thus from iOS as well. No local copy is retained on iOS, unless you saved it before.

I sent a bug report to that end.

I found the solution to my music issue. My iTunes library is pretty large, so I host it on an external hard drive. I copied one album into a newly-created iTunes library, this time on the hard drive of my laptop, and the songs appeared in Photos. I'll just have to copy the desired background tracks into the secondary iTunes library for inclusion into any subsequent slideshows.

In other words, if your iTunes library is hosted on the internal HDD of your computer, you should have no problems.

EDIT: I neglected to note that my Photos library is on the same external HDD as my iTunes library. I've kept both on an external for the past several years, as they've grown a bit extensive. My Photos library is over 200GB, for example. My rMBP has only a 250GB SSD, so there's no way I could begin to fit my iTunes and Photos libraries internally. Why the Photos library, on my external HDD, refuses to even see my iTunes library, on that same external HDD, is beyond me. At least I know how to manipulate the Photos app.
