Question about unlocking iPhone 3GS

I have AT&T now. I am about to buy an iPhone 3GS but I dont want to pay the $30 Data plan. Especially since I wont really need it. Could I unlock the iPhone so I do not need register for the $30 data plan?

No. AT&T will know you are using an iPhone 3GS and put you on a data plan regardless.
