Question about updating software on JB'd 3G

I jailbroke my 3G for the first time just after QuickPwn for the 2.1 was released, and I've since been able to successfully restore factory settings and re-jailbrake with no problems, however, with 2.2 software on the brink of release, I've got a question about updating software.

Should I restore my iPhone before choosing to install the software, or will it work fine if I just go ahead and install without restoring?

I think it should be fine just upgrading. Your Jailbreak will get wiped (along with everything else) after the upgrade to 2.2. At that point, who knows how long before the next JB. Same day? A month later? My guess is sooner than later though..

i don't think you have to restore before you upgrade, but i strongly recommend putting your iPhone into DFU mode before you upgrade. when prompted for the update, click yes to download, but unplug device so it doesn't install. then get into DFU and option-click restore to the new FW.

What would be the purpose for putting the phone into DFU before upgrading?

You may first want to install and run AptBackup from Cydia. It will record the apps that you have from Cydia.

Plug in your device, and back it up with iTunes.

Update your software (not restore).

Re-jailbreak.

Re-install AptBackup, and run the program. It will re-install everything that you had previously from Cydia. It will not remember your settings, but you will not have to download everything manually.

Anything that you install via SSH will need to be done again.
