This is the first time I've been in position of owning (well, being the family support call for) a Mac that is now no longer officially supported by the newest OS, and as such I've not seen this before. If this is normal then that's fine, if a bit annoying. I got a call from my mum yesterday who's got an App Store notification that there's an update available. When she clicks it the only thing that it's saying is available as an update is macOS Sierra. Now, she's running an early 2009 Mac mini which according to everything I've read cannot run Sierra. Is she going be constantly told to upgrade to an OS that her Mac can't even run or will these notifications stop at some point?

For what it is worth I have a 2007 imac that shows sierra in app store, probably because it same apple id as my 2009 macbook which does support sierra.
But I do not get update alerts for sierra on my imac.
same for my 2007 15" macbook pro and 2006 17" macbook pro, niether of these get update alerts for sierra.
They will not run sierra.

I'm sure your Mum is sharp as a tack but if her Mini is indeed a 2009 model there's no alert for an update to Sierra. It must be an alert for something else. When I get an alert for an app or system update on my 2007 MacBook Pro and open App Store there's the big "macOS Sierra" picture at the top (as elf69 describes) but there's no button to download or upgrade to it.

Sharp as a brick normally. I did tell her to read to me EXACTLY what was on the screen. I'll have to have a look next weekend. It's definitely a 2009 mini
