Question about Using 1Password ?

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to know what do you guys think about using APPS like 1Password when Apple itself in iOS 12 offers Password Management and remembering feature. So does it leave any need for having an APP like 1Password for your password management ?

The main advantage of managers like 1Password and LastPass is cross platform availability.

So you are saying that even iOS 12 offers the password management feature now ? And if I am using it only one one device that is iPad ! Would you still then recommended it ? I am not using it cross platform ! Only one device iOS iPad Pro !

It is very basic offering. It remembers your usernames and passwords, plus offers password suggestions. It though lacks a lot of features such as monitoring for website breaches, security checks of your passwords and usernames, being able to securely store information in addition to credit card info, provide family members access if you grant them it with, sharing of passwords. Lastpass offers alot of these features for free I may add.

Keychain is kept on iCloud and just synced with the iOS device. It forms part of your iCloud storage use if you have ticked the setting.

That is a great suggestion. last Pass is available for free ! I do not mind paying for an APP But as long as it is a one time reasonable price. I do not like and want to get into a monthly subscription kind of set up which is what 1Password is asking for. So in thay sense LastPass looks interesting will give it a try. Thanks for suggesting it.

I am now confused between Lastpass or Keeper which one to go for ??

I got Dashlane because it has a better UI for me. I have a Pixel phone (Android), an iPad Air 2013, and a Mac Mini 2012. It works well across them. If I had everything Apple I might have considered not purchasing a password manager. I almost never spend money, let alone in software subscriptions, but I have to be honest and I feel alright having spend money on this because it really makes my life simpler.

In this digital age I appreciate having things like LastPass. I pay the subscription and have family plan to share critical login information with my wife and son. If anything were to happen to me they'd have full access to medical, financial, insurance and life insurance information. Gives me peace of mind. The cross platform capability of these password managers is fantastic. I've got an Android phone and an iPad along with a MacBook and windows machine so having a one app fits all manager is great.

How much does Dashlane charge you ? is it one time Fee ? or a Monthly Subscription ?

Having used the two, I find the two don’t really have much overlap.

The main issue for me is that I use a windows laptop at work, with a number of passwords I have to remember. While the passwords generated by iCloud Keychain are probably more secure, they are along way longer and more cumbersome to type in manually. So 1Password is more practical when it comes to generating 8-12 character passwords.

Also, I am able to quickly search for passwords stored in 1Password via spotlight on my iPhone, or view it on my wrist via my Apple Watch. Maybe if Apple made a standalone app that allowed me to quickly access and view my passwords, instead of expecting me to leap into the settings app every time.

I downloaded 1Password back when it was offered free and have been able to get full functionality from it without paying the current subscription rate. So I see no reason to stop using it until something changes.

I have got a free trial offer from 1Password which expires in a month. So are you saying I can still keep using the free version even after the free trial period ? Do they even have one in the first place ? I don't even know that ?

1Password is much more flexible than Apple's offering is. I can use it as a generator for two-factor authentication codes (2FA), I can store notes, it gives me warnings if a password could be breached from a website, use it across several different platforms. macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, works on all, Apple's offering doesn't do such, I'm not fully independent on Apple for my passwords.

Also, it does seems like Apple are using 1Password internally.

After the free trial you will need to pay to carry on using it. Prior to the subscription model you could purchase it with one off fee and receive updates. Not sure if you can do that now and if it is the case, is buried somewhere on their website.

For me is their biggest weakness as if someone was unfortunate to gain access to either account then they have full reign to access what they like. Authy is the best free two factor authenticator app.

Have both and use both.
My work provides premium 1Password for me and family so I use it only for using any other browser than Safari on my Mac.
For every thing else keychain is enough for me as it syncs across all my iOS devices natively.
1Password is more powerful than keychain for sure specially the premium enterprise Version but for me I tend to use keychain more than 1Password.
