I have a somewhat urgent question and anyone's help will be great ly appreciated. I will be traveling to Italy next week and I have an old 1st gen iPhone (currently at 3.0, I think) that is doing nothing but serving as an iPod touch with camera since I upgraded to a 3GS in June.
While I will be taking my 3GS along on AT&T's "Expanded International Roaming," those rates are still awfully high and data is way too expensive roaming. So, I remembered my old iPhone and thought I might jailbreak and unlock it for use with a European SIM. Since I should be permitted to do such a thing with a phone that has fulfilled its contract and shouldn't be locked anymore anyhow, I am looking for advice on the jailbreak, unlock, activation with Euro SIM process. One particular question stands out as critical to me.
And that question is this: if I jailbreak and unlock the 1st gen iPhone and then get an Italian SIM, will I then need to connect the phone to a computer running iTunes to activate the phone on the Italian/International SIM? Or can I just plug the SIMin and have it work right off?
Thanks for any info on that and the process in general. With just one carry-on, I won't have room carry along a MacBook with iTunes on this trip.
