question about using Apple Pencil with iOS notes

Aloha everyone, i'm a prodigious scribbler of notes and lists. notes on my iPhone is easily the most used app (i also use it a lot on my macbook air). and i keep note pads, too. For me, paper and pen has always captured spontaneity better than an app. But, I'm always drawn to the allure going paperless with an apple pencil and my 9.7 iPad pro.

So i have a question about how notes works with apple pencil:

can the dimension (i.e. length) of the note be lengthened when you're using the pencil? And if so, how? Or are you stuck with the original rectangle dimension once you enter handwriting mode?

Are my questions making sense?

I just tested this, on an Pad Pro 10.5" running iOS 10.3.3, and it appears that you are indeed limited to the original rectangle when the note opens.

I cannot - unless I'm doing something wrong - get the page length to extend "downward".

I don't know if this is different in iOS11, as I am not running that (there are some significant changes coming in iOS11 with the Notes app).

Thanks for testing it! It seems silly (conceptually) that you get a rectangle for handwriting in, but as soon as you fill it up, you have to start a new note. Whereas if you're typing, you can extend the length indefinitely.

Come on apple!

I was in an Apple Store recently and played with a iPad Pro and pencil. I noticed that with notability, you get more real estate. But there's no 'auto expansion' if you are near the edges. Still it's better than iOS 10 notes.

No page length restriction and no going to another module for handwriting and drawing. Also various sized papers, landscape or portrait. They send you more when you buy. In Sept they are adding more features but the main is handwriting and it's searchable, drawing inline, convert to text, swipe to add another page, free form select and reduce size (they're adding rotate soon) import your own stationery/forms. They're reorganizing the file structure too in Sept. Forget what else. See YouTube for upcoming changes to Notes but I still don't think it can beat GoodNotes. I think Nebo has convert to text but it's long winded and not as accurate.

How do you extend page length in Goodnotes? I've always limited to a single page.

I just tried this in the latest public beta and it will extend the page if there is any handwriting below the top edge of the screen.

When you're on your last page, use two fingers to pull the page to the left. You will see arrows appear on the background at the top right and the words 'pull to add.' Then let go and get a new page.

Ok, yeah I know how to add pages, I thought you were saying that you could make a single page infinitely long.

I just poked around in Notes on iOS 11, 8. The page length seems unlimited. All you do is flick up with a finger and you get more page.

Thanks everyone, I might go give iOS 11 notes another try... still, I love the idea of a limitless length note with the pencil - given that one's handwriting will be larger than typing text. Still, I continue to use my trusty note pad and pen!
