Question About Using Education Discount

Hi guys!
So, as some of you may know, my mom works in a local school so I get the Apple Education Discount because I buy all my Mac and iPod stuff using her account/credit card with Apple. However, she recently began the job (like 3 months ago) and I never used the discount of her's online. Do I need some kind of proof? Like does my mom need to fax a school teacher ID to Apple or something along those lines?

No, all she needs to do is to select her school from the pull down menu and electonically sign the agreement. If Apple wants proof, they will call the District Office to verify employment. They have done this to me when I bought my Nano this year. They are very liberal with this discount, especially if the district purchases quite a bit from them.

You only need "proof" if you are buying directly from an Apple store. Generally you have to show the school ID card or whatever. My cousin just went on his college's email account at the store to show the guy he's attending and they gave him the discount.

So they're not too strict about it then? Cool. I was hoping we wouldn't have to through the trouble of faxing stuff and so on. But so, if this is the case, what prevents just anyone from signing in online and getting the discount even if they aren't a teacher or student?

It is Fraud if you claim to be a student or faculty on the website when you really aren't. But I just don't see how it's really enforced. Better be safe than sorry. Your mom works for the school district so it's all ok. Just be sure to know hte limitations. For instance they limit one laptop per year or something like that. One iPod nano per fiscal year, one ACD per fiscal year ect... It's something like that. Cuz if your mom wants a laptop and you already claimed one...

I just don't see how it's really enforced.

It's enforced by random checks. I know, as I have been randomly checked.

When I purchased my iBook in 2001, I was asked to fax a copy of my student ID. Since I purchased it in July and I wasn't beginning my first semester of college until August, I sent in my letter of acceptance (which was acceptable).

Then, when I purchased an iPod in December of 2002, I was asked to fax a copy of my tuition bill for the current semester.

Just be aware that there is a possibility you will be checked.

I have nothing to worry about. Just wondered if they actully checked. It seems like a quick and easy 200 buck discount on the MBP.

Yeah, it's definitely a relaxed enforcement. I bought my PowerMac last July at an Apple Store and they asked to see my student ID card, but the guy didn't even look at it. It could have been a Monopoly "Go Straight to Jail" card and he wouldn't have known.
