what does use internet robustness (think thats what it is, not at my mac right now). What does that setting mean, when I click on the airport icon at the top bar?

what does it do when its on, compared to it off?

First off, it is interference robustness, not internet robustness.

Basically it deals with signal interference by boosting your short range antenna reception. At the same time you will lose long range distance reception.
