Question about Yosemite folders

i'd like to know if anyone else encountered this, but in some cases the little grey triangle/arrow (i have no idea what it's called - but you can see it in one of the attachments i added) on the left side of a folder is not showing. it's the triangle you click on to basically do the same action as option+down arrow, to open a folder but stay in the 'main' folder. that short key (option+down arrow) also does not work with folders that don't have the grey arrow/triangle next to it.

it doesn't show in my 'downloads folder', however in sub-folders of the 'downloads folder' it does show. this also is the case with my external hd's.
the 'grey triangle/arrow' does show in my itunes, pictures, movies & documents folder.

i find it quite annoying and i was wondering if this is a new thing with yosemite or that it just happens with me.

so, basically it only happens in my download folder & my external hard drives (mac format).

i just did a third clean install in four weeks, but nothing changes. other than that yosemite seems to work quite alright, although i seem to prefer mavericks a bit more than the former.

Well I definitely get it in both the Downloads folder and all sub-folders so that isn't default/normal behaviour.

Beyond that, no idea.

Check your Sort option. From what I see it should be set to None in order to see the "Disclosure arrows" (I believe that's what they're called).

Something went seriously wrong with your installation. Why is your header bar on the second picture translucent? It seems like your Finder executable is corrupted. Please look at your system logs (Console app) regarding Finder-related messages, try repairing permissions and checking your filesystem. How exactly did you do the clean install? It is possible that your installer is damaged, which could lead to all kinds of trouble. From my experience, the best way to do a clean install is to reformat the disk, install the original OS from internet recovery and then immediately upgrade to Yosemite.

P.S. Yeah, before you do what I suggested you should probably try GerritV's way But still, that header bar should not be translucent like that!

first of all, i'd like to say thank you to everyone for their input. GerritV's suggestion did work. so thank you (dankjewel) for your input, sir.

however i'm still wondering if that is default behaviour? and even more: why?
but i guess only the developers will know the answer to that question.

i came across another 'issue' ... it seems that icons of .rar files, .mp3 & .avi, mp4, .cbr, etc either are blank or wrong (eg. the vlc icon for a .rar file etc).
one of these issues you can see in the attachments. i have a .cbr in the folder and with symbol size set to small it shows the icon for Xee. but when the symbol size is set to large (after all, i'm sitting in front of a 27" 2014 iMac), the icon goes blank.

@leman, for the clean install i did the following steps (from macworld's how to make a bootable drive):
1. download the installer.app to application folder
2. use the createinstallmedia command in terminal
3. first time i did 3 pass format of my HDD, second time i did a 1 pass format & last time i did a 7 pass (let it run over night)
4. i left a bootcamp partion intact, so i wouldn't have to go through an hours long windows reinstall and update.
5. install

i've been doing clean install since snow leopard, never had one problem or issue. however, i've noticed that osx-daily mentioned to choose for 'GUID Partition Table', when formatting the usb. which i never did. might that explain why?

also for the last clean install, i downloaded OSX again (in yosemite) and did step one & two again. with the second clean install, i just used the original usb bootable. didn't change much, as the same issues arose.

about the translucence, i have no idea why but i came across it after every clean install.

i think i'll go over the things you mentioned (repairing permissions), if that doesn't change things i'll do another clean install, but this time reformat the usb (GUID Partition Table).
and if that fails, i'll go back to mavericks. i'm done with yosemite.

I've noticed it a couple of times (the translucence) when moving back to a Space with Finder windows open in Mission Control.

It might be worth to do the checks suggested but Yosemite has a plethora of graphical glitches depending on system at this point, I would probably put it down to that.

Glad to hear you've sorted it out suedehead. Things like that can bug you, right?

As for your question why a simple sorting can ruin the disclosure functionality, my answer would be: because the MacOSX Finder is actually a crappy file manager. I wish Apple would give it some more attention (I mean other than translucency )
