So my APP got the 4A400 firmware update and a few days later I misplaced them. I tried using Find My, which showed the APP last connected while at my house (good) so I started sweeping from room to room trying to find them.

Nothing.

Later, my partner told me that they knew where the APP were and so I tried again to use Find My to “find them.” Nothing. Finally I picked them up, flicked open the case - and Find My started guiding me to them.

My question is; does the APP case have to be cracked open in order to activate Find My? If that’s the case (no pun intended) what’s the point of Find My? I’m really hoping for user error on this one, because I misplace thing often.

I am having the same issue. It doesn’t work until they have been connected (flicked open) then it works for a while even when the case is closed and then after a while it stops working again. I suppose we will not have a fully functioning find my until they build in the UWB chip which will probably not be the case until the global chip shortage ceases. It’s a shame really. The one thing that I always misplace are my AirPods. :(

No, it doesn’t need to be open. My wife used FindMy to search for her AirPods Pro last night. FindMy even plays a sound through the closed lid.

But yeah, a U1 chip in the case would be SO HELPFUL. I’ll bet it’s in the AirPods Pro 2s. It would help justify the higher price from the AirPod 3s.

My iPhone 8 plus can locate my AirPod Pros with the cased close at about 40 feet, although I can't hear the beeping sound with the case closed at 40 feet. At about 15 feet they indicate "Near" and within about 2 feet and they indicate "Hear."

My iPad Pro M1 can't do this at all.

Sort of worked for me (actually had same experience as the OP). I'd put my APP on a counter where I really never put anything. Couldn't find them and tried "findy my" from my phone. As I walked around the house hoping to get a signal I saw the airpods. But the tech didn't work for me either.

I thought I was the only one noticing this. My APPs never seem to show up where they actually are, rather always where I last used them. They can be next to me at my desk and FindMy still shows them at Starbucks.
