Just on the off chance that anyone hear might have experience with this:

I’d like to take advantage of one of the Walmart black Friday iPhone X promotions to buy a phone for my daughter to replace her current phone. I understand that these deals are contingent on activating the new phone on an account ( for example, and AT&T Next plan). However, is there any way to do so (purchase the phone and make the appropriate commitment with respect to the payment plan) without actually “activating” the phone in store, which I assume will result in disabling her current phone right then and there? I’d rather keep the fact that she’s getting thie phone a surprise until Christmas.

Thanks,
Mike

I did this last year but with Verizon and the stipulation was that it had to be bought and activated. I’m pretty sure that applies to all participating carriers. It also states in the ad “activated”.

Couldn't you buy the phone and activate it on the carrier of your choice with a different phone number then at Christmas deactivate her old phone and move her number to the new phone? You might have two plans for a month - I would get a cheap one on the new phone - then cancel and switch to her plan and number.

I would ask because this question has got to have come up.
