Yes.
Primary: iPhone 6s+, iOS 9.0.2
Secondary: iPhone 5, iOS 10.3.3
Secondary phone is used for Walmart Pay, CVS Pay, store loyalty cards, authenticator apps (Google, Yahoo) and anything else I can think of to use it for. As it's a smaller device it's easier to take out and pay with.
Eventually the line it is using will be given to my daughter when she's old enough to be responsible for a line.

I have several iPhones on my desk, but none of them are active
I only have my one iPhone X in use
I could have a second one for work, but I choose to have a stipend instead and just use my phone for work as well
For me, it isn't a problem, although I know others would have issues with it

I use the X as my primary and keep the 8+ around, just in case I want to watch netflix or youtube in the bed on the bigger screen, its probably the last iPhone with the old design and the only spare iPhone that I have so I feel a bit emotional on getting rid of it.
I also keep my entire photo library downloaded on the 8 since I often find myself editing them in VSCO and downloading them from iCloud every-time I want to access them just takes ages.

My main phone is the X, backup is a 6S. The 6S served me very well and right now it’s doing duty as an iPod. If anything unexpected happens to the X I’ll have something to use until it’s repaired or replaced.
My main line is my Verizon iPhone X. My second line is my T-Mobile 5c. Both are active accounts. I am thinking of upgrading the second line to a newer phone and possibly porting over the T-Mobile line.
Yes, a 7+. I keep it restored with my X data so it would be ready to go in an instant. Left half charged in a safe place.

The answer to the OPs question is another question: How comfortable would you if you lost your one & only iPhone? (Or if it suddenly died). No big deal? Devastating?
If an iPhone is an important part of your life that you rely on - then having a backup in the form of some older cheaper model seems like a good idea.
I kept my old iPhone 5 for this purpose. It's ready to go as a backup if disaster strikes.

I keep all my old phones. Except the ones which had nothing important in their history.
So I’ve still got a few from way back.
My iPhone 5 was just retired last month. And I’ll keep it in case the information on it is ever needed.
I migrated it’s content to my new phone. But the information is important enough that a backup is necessary. And I can’t restore its contents to a future phone without wiping said phone of whatever contents it may have at the time.
As a side benefit, I could put my SIM card into that phone and use it if my current iPhone 7 were to die.

It would be inconvenient to be sure
But my primary use of the phone is email and text, both of which I get on my computers, so I wouldn't be blind
I would get a new phone as soon as possible and restore from my local backup, but it wouldn't be the end of the world
My iPhone X is my daily driver. I have an SE which I have as a back up in the event my X takes a catastrophic drop which renders the device inoperable. I have AC+ on my X, but I like having the SE just in case.

I have Samsung Galaxy s8 active as just in case phone. Case like having unfortunately my iPhone X in service. Active is also good phone for exotic trip overseas (nobody wants to steal it) and going for all night hardcore party in town (even being in “god mode” - I enjoy as bastard but don’t remember everything from last night). Device for hard tasks, quite idiot proof and indestructible

Having a working backup on hand is essential, even if one has AppleCare+, as the problem phone may need to be sent off for repair.
No backup, never a problem. If I lose my phone, I'll buy a new one same day, not a big deal.
If something happens it’s easy to get a new sim and deal with a replacement later.
5SE for my back up
I have an X as my regular phone and a NextBit Robin with no sim inside just as a back up phone in case my iPhone X is broken and totally unusable

I really like them all. 5x was fun to check out all the latest betas and Google driven OS changes. There will always be a place for the 5/5s/SE design in my heart. It's easier on both platforms to have a logged in secondary device in the case you lose the primary, it's the quickest and easiest way to disable the first.

I'm pretty sure that Apple gives loaners.
No backup phone for me. The contents of my phone are backed up, but if the actual device was lost or destroyed I'd go straight to an Apple Store and replace it, and if it just needs repairs, as I said, I'm pretty sure Apple gives you a loaner to use.
