Question for Macbook Owners

Right now, I'm torn between a macbook and a macbook pro. I have a powerbook g4 and it's built extremely rigid. I was wondering if the macbook's physical construction is as rigid as the AL PB's.

The reason I ask is that I haven't used or touched a macbook. My previous laptop was a dell inspiron and its constuction was soooo flimsy it was ridiculous. I could bend it back and forth and I don't want that to happen with another plastic laptop.

I would recommend going into an Apple Store and checking them out if possible. I folded one up and tossed it about, and they feel very sturdy, especially compared to the iBooks (which I never really liked). They compare favorably to the Macbook Pro as far as sturdiness goes, IMHO. Seriously though, try one out if you can.

Was it by chance a Dell Inspiron 600m?

Um, depends, do you want the screen real estate of a 15.4" widescreen, or would a 13.3" widescreen suit your needs? (I had to go with the 15.4" myself ) Graphics power, do you need a seperate GPU? Lastly, having never touched a macbook, but having found the Macbook Pro to be sufficiently light enough (well, it is ), couldn't tell you about weight though I've heard the Macbook is a little heavy.

the MacBook is very sturdy, as said before, much more so than the iBook. I can't tell yo what it's like comopared to a MBP because I've only really seen one in a shop and to be honest with you I didn't try bending it.
Bottom line: Apple's hard ware is generally very good quaility, much better built than any Dell!

Well built, so thin and light you can hold it between two fingers without taking the risk of dropping it. People just say the MB is heavy because: 1. They're weak. j/k. 2. The 15" MBP weighs only a bit more. 3. The MB is but a little lighter than the 14" iBook.

IMO the MB is extremely well built. Go for it!

My MB is extremely sturdy and duarable. Although I still way prefer the MBP. I LOVE those aluminium casings

I would recommend the macbook if you would like to save money. I owned one for a couple days and it seemed very sturdy. On the other hand, it also seemed like it would smudge and scractch very easily. I now own a macbook pro and am happier than ever.

I heard someone posted the complains on MB's sturdiness because the top part of the main chassis tends to get separated from the bottom part. I heard that was glued together and as the MB gets heated up, the glue becomes less effective, causing some separation of those 2 parts.

Actually, it was an older 8100. The casing warps so much when you pick it from one side or the other, i think it's messed up the motherboard and/or the gpu. This thing was a beast though, it'd weighed almost 10lbs with 2 batteries in it and the frame was defintiely not built for it. My dad has one of the 600m's though, and his is alright.

I'd love to go to an apple store to check out some of the models, but the closest one to me is about an hour to an hour an half (depending on traffic) and its in a direction I rarely travel in.

I'm definitely think i'm leaning towards the MBP, but I'm waiting to see this upcoming revision.

The MB is sturdier than the MBP. At least in terms of picking it up and whether it bends. You can hold the MB from a corner with 3 fingers and it is just fine. Still not recommended to do this, though.

you're sadly right, my new inspiron's plastic is already looking very bad.

The MB is far sturdier than the MBP which, like the Powerbook, will dent. I owned a Powerbook and it got badly dented from a very minor incident and as it turned out the warranty was totally voided. When I later had an issue with it I got told "well it probably happened when you made that dent". So I bought another Powerbook.

I travel a lot and when upgrading to an Intel Mac gave it a lot of consideration whether to go to a MBP or MB (I owned a 12" Powerbook). I bought the MB and I'm glad I did. Now I don't have to worry about if it gets bumped through the x-ray device at the airport or in the over head cabin on the plane.

my macbook seems to be a little flimsy....my friend has a dell, and although the dell FEELS cheap, it's more solid. it doesnt squeak then you press on it like my macbook does. i would guess that a MBP would feel more sturdy, but it does tend to dent easily. but the macbooks scratch easily....its just a give and take situation.

i reccomend you purchase a black MacBook its a fast little machine! its way more portable then the MBP's and the black books have way less cosmetic issues then the white MacBooks. the glossy screen is great!!! beleive it or not...

The MB is great but It'd be even better with a back lit keyboard and Expresscard expansion port for either a media card reader or 3G wireless adapter.
