Hello to all. I have a question. I want to get a mifi but i am going back and forth between the Verizon and Sprint. Both cost the same. My question though is this. I am going to purchase the mifi at full price without the 1 or 2 year committment. Do you know if there is a connection fee and a disconnection fee that is charged everytime you call to turn it on for that month? I really don't need the mifi every single month but I go through times where I am traveling 4 to 6 weeks at a time and then back home for 2 months. I will be using the Mifi for the Ipad and my macbookpro.

Depending on your phone situation, you might also want to consider just switching phones to either the Palm Pre Plus or Pixi Plus on Verizon. They can act as a mobile hot spot with just the regular data package and not get charged the extra fee.

I have been looking into the same thing for Verizon (Sprint told me when I called that it only offers the 2 year subscription). Buying it outright and either do the $60 5gb a month and cancel for the months I don't need it. Or the pay as you go option which there is a 1day 75mb, 1 week 250mb or 1 month 500mb. If you do the pay as you go there is no activation fee, there is if you do the $60 option.
Or you can buy a WinMo phone on any carrier and run it as a wifi hotspot, no problemo.
Contrary to popular belief the new phones such as the HD2 and TouchPro 2 are nice with beautiful screens
I don't know about Verizon, but Sprint has a seasonal stand by plan for $5.95/mo.
People don't realize how big of a deal the ATT iPad 3G plan is. You have never been able to just start and stop service when you want to.
Another option is Virgin Mobile. They offer some pretty good pay as you go plans.
You buy the USB Mobile Broadband adapter and plug that baby into cradlepoint WiFi router. Voila! WiFi access for everything in the room including the iPad.

If you're going to start and stop the cellular broadband access, you'll probably be better off getting the 3G iPad (and selling or returning the wifi model if you've already got one).
If you're going to want full-time access or want to also use the data plan on a laptop, then the MiFi makes more sense.
Also, as another member pointed out, you can get yourself a Verizon Palm Pre Plus and use the mobile hotspot option, which is currently free. Though personally I'm not a big fan of the Palm phones (few apps and poor battery life).
If you don't mind volating your terms of service, the Verizon Droid and AT&T/T-Mobile Nexus One can easily be rooted (jailbreak, in iPhone-speak) and used as a hotspot as well.

Thank you for the different options. I am testing out the Palm Pre Plus right now on my Ipad. Taking advantage of the 30 day return. Phone looks allright. I don't know about the battery yet as I have not had it long enough.
