Hello,

Quick question.. I'm pretty anxious about getting the new iPad coming up, and was curious as to whether or not Apple normally allows you to pre-order device to be delivered to your house on release day. Easy to do? Or have other people had better luck just camping outside the Apple store and picking it up on release day?

Thanks!

iPhone last year was pre-ordered, but this year is was not.

iPad may or may not have a pre-order as most would like. Since this time, Apple changed on the iPhone I would not guarantee the iPad will have a pre-order this time around

As previous poster said, it's not clear whether or not there will be preorders this year, but we'll find out when the iPad is announced. If preorders are available, it's easy if you can stay up / wake up early to place an order as soon as the orders go up (usually midnight California time). I've done this many times for iPads and iPhones, and they always arrived on release day.

Would you suggest the Apple Store app or Apple.com?

If there's preorders definitely try using the Apple store app, Every time i've preordered before a mass launch I've been able to be done in 2-3 minutes while people are still hitting refresh button on their computer ;)

Apple Store App / Apple.com

When I was waiting to order the iphone 5s I had my ipad mini running the Apple Store app and had the apple.com on my imac. The apple.com showed the site still down when the apple app put my order thru and i was in the first batch of phones shipped. I will do the same thing for the ipad 5.

That is awesome to know. On the app, were you opening/closing that to refresh it? Or was it doing it automatically, and was the order option on the main screen or did you have to navigate your way through the app to find it? Thanks for the feedback guys.

I bought the iPad 4 last year through the Apple website as soon as you could preorder it. I received it about 4 pm on November 2nd. Of course the 4 wasn't in demand like the 2. As other posters have stated, the whole no preorder for the iPhone 5s puts some uncertainty in if Apple will do preorders.

hopefully this new ipads release is not the same thing as iphone 5S. i see that people are still waiting for their iphones well in fact they ordered it on the first day of it's launch. maybe Ipads are different. we will see. it's really getting so frustrating with apple with this order and wait one month to get your stuff. they knew exactly how people will react and yet availability is so pathetic.

I'm going to be on that **** like white on rice. I'll use the app to order the iPad 5 before 12:05 AM PST. Any later, and I might be waiting a extra week... well maybe not, since the iPads aren't as crazy popular as the iPhones.

Lol. That is interesting though.. I've never been apart of an iPad release (first iPad, I'm very aware of all the iPhone craziness), so what kind of availability issues should I expect? Just curious, because I had seen some YouTube videos of people waiting in line for iPads (3, 4 specifically) where the lines were huge and wrapped around blocks..

I'm not sure since it will be my first iPad as well, and I've never preordered anything from Apple. lol

When I ordered my iPad 2 on launch day, I set my alarm for 4 am (am in EDT) so I could order it as soon as Apple started taking orders. I had a two-week shipping date. That was Friday, March 11, 2011. Online shipping delays jumped to three weeks by Sunday, and around five weeks by the following Tuesday.

There are no Apple stores within 200 miles of my home; while the local WalMart had about five on March 11, 2011, they were not allowed to sell them until 5 pm that day and sold out within an hour. The downstate Apple stores sold out just as quickly.

Hard to say what will happen with the iPad 5 - you can always order online and then if you find the model you wish at a local store on launch day, you can cancel your online order.

I'm not sure about the refresh part, because when I used the app to order, it was already up. The app's main page is the featured products page, so when you open the app the link to buy an iPad will be the first thing you see.

I ordered my mini just after release last year. Minutes past 12, the apple store app had a full selection of models. By late morning, cheaper models were gone first, along with most white models over the day.

Shipments started the following week, with tracking showing movement earlier than expected. Then it froze, and didn't move until the day before release. Arrival was easy and predictable.

I have a few questions as well;

  • For those of you that got yours via shipping on launch day, do you live in a highly dense area, or somewhere were shipping like that would be less likely?
  • How fast do you think a base model "gold" color would sell out if they were to release one?
  • Has anyone here manged to preorder via the website sucessfully?

1. I live in UK mainland, we get normal postal and courier deliveries.
2. Fast, very fast I suspect I'm afraid. Is gold a necessity?
3. Yes, I ordered my iPad Mini the day the pre-orders opened and got it the morning they were released.

I seem to remember that last year the iPads were released in the states only and the uk a few weeks later. I was going to sell my ipad 4 tomorrow but not sure if I could go for nearly a month without it
