I had my ipad for about a week, had wifi issues, and realized the 3g would be best for me. So i returned it. Im going to get the 3g next week, but i am also thinking about getting a mbp. I have a dell studio thats about 2 years old, but the trackpad is starting to go out, so i am starting to think about a new laptop as well. Do you think i should get the mbp in addition to the ipad, or do you not use your laptop enough to justify buying a new one? also, im in college if that would affect the decision any.

If you think you will use your MBP constructivly to Create. I say go for it.
Word Processing and surfing, get a netbook.

depends on your usage...i have both MBP and Ipad...

i use ipad to browse internet and do some small work functions and i use the MBP for my heavy editing. I'm married so whichever one i'm not using, my wifes uses the other.

I also have a mini and a ATV that compliments my addiction to apple...once you get one...you'll never buy anything else but apple

I use my MBP for when I need a laptop, Adobe CS, Word, Excel etc.

Right now I grab the iPad to take to meetings, when I run errands with my wife.

Also if I just plan on cruising the web and reading some PDFs at night I take my iPad with me instead of my 17" MBP.

The iPad is about 80-90% able to replace my mobile computing needs. Mainly its lack of full office support at the moment that is the issue (tracking changes in word documents in particular). I feel this is a temporary limitation that will be fixed by this time next year.

Once the software catches up, I am going to trade in myMBP for a Mac Pro with 2 30" monitors for hardcore computing and carry the iPad around for all other needs. If you don't have a need for a Mac Pro, I would go for a 27" iMac. Again, not until the iPad software catches up.

All i really need the mbp for would be downloading my lecture slides, pdfs, writing my papers that i would later edit on the ipad, creating powerpoints, and managing my music for my ipad, ipod, and maybe iphone if it really comes to verizon this year. It would be nice to go all apple, but i dont want to put about $1400 into something that wouldnt be used very much. All the things i listed are things i noticed the ipad didnt do so well, and i would need a computer that has multitasking for researching and writing the papers. I would get the standard macbook, but i like the look of the macbook pro alot more. The money isnt really an issue, but i am in college and it would be nice to have that extra money for plane tickets and such. Another question is, do you think i would notice a difference between the two 13 inch models processors doing those tasks?

My MBP is the best laptop I've ever had. I've owner Toshiba, Sony, Fugitsu, Dell and Panasonic. The Apple is the best hands down. Even in Windows mode through BootCamp or VMWare, it's better. Sirona (makers of 3-D imaging) have software that is Windows based only. The company used iMacs with Windows (bootcamp) because the hardware is far better than anything else they've tried. The new MBP with Core5 and Core7 processors will be very fast. Construction (unibody) of the MBP is likewise superior to any of the competition. A MBP will be the best computer you'll get.

The iPad is a really nice toy. I love mine. I've had no issues with it what so ever. The iPad is NOT a computer. It does NOT have a computer OS. The iPhone OS is perfect for this device, but it in no way can replace a computer. In fact, you have to be able to connect to iTunes to activate it and use it to any appreciable amount. In order to access any Keynote or PPT presentations, you either have to connect through iTunes or e-mail it to yourself. Definately a weak point in the iPad and iWorks for iPad, IMO. Hopefully they'll change this and allow at least downloads and uploads to iDisk. Apple is going to push their iWorks.com (a lame version of Google Docs that is a document sharing site - useless if you want to keep your files private).

If you can only afford one, get the MBP. Then as funds become available, get the iPad.

Ipad and MBP

I have a 21.5 IMAC, 13 MBP and the Ipad. I use them all and would not dream of selling any.

You need both a computer and an iPad. The iPad does NOT replace a computer, it is just great for couch internet surfing.

It just broils down to how bad you hate your dell studio. $1,400 is alot to spend, but if you like to do homework at a starbucks or have alot of group projects where you need to carry your work around, then I think you should get the MBP. I'm not in college anymore, but if I was, I would definitely get a MBP in addition to my iPad. Actually, I would only have the MBP because I won't be able to afford an iPad. :p

I have an iMac, MBP and iPad and since getting the iPad I have literally touched my MBP 3 times..

the only times i'm not using my iPad is because I'm either converting/editing a movie or doing some indepth work which isn't able to be done on the iPad..

It's just much easier carrying the iPad around instead of lugging around the MBP..

I'm also a college student. I have a 13" MBP along with the iPad. When it comes to my school work, I use my MBP since I can't do programming on myPad. Once I have my school work done for the day, I don't even touch my MBP since I do all my leisure on the iPad.

If I had more money to spend, I would get rid of my MBP and buy an iMac. I don't really need to do much portable heavy lifting so I don't feel the need to have a laptop anymore.

But then again, that's just me. My wife says she wouldn't want a desktop and would always prefer a laptop as a main computer.

If you're not using a student loan refund to purchase both devices and have the money then get both if you want.

If you *are* using student loan money then I'd just get the mbp. The iPad is fun but is primarily a luxury item at this point. The laptop will be much more useful to you--and it can do everything the iPad does.

In about 6 months, so many people will have iPads it won't be so cutting edge anymore. I think Steve Jobs has found a way to transmit heroin to the user when they touch the iPad screen. :)

I bought an iPad and loved it. It finally sold me on making the switch to Mac. a week after I bought the iPad, I bought a MBP and I could not be happier with the two. They both serve different purposes and I use both on a daily basis.

You should buy both.

Get an iPhone while you are at it, if you do not already have one.

Bless you, sir. My investment account thanks you. :D

You're welcome. It's just that Apple makes good products.

In any case, the OP needs a computer to sync with his iPad, and iPhone if he chooses to get one.

I would not call anathema down on him if he choose to wait for the new iPhone hardware, though.
