Question in a new iPad Mini 4 and carrier lock?

I purchased a brand new sealed iPad Mini 32gb cellular off Craigslist. It was sealed and technically is a Sprint version with Sprint SIM. I have not activated it on Sprint nor do I want too. Can I just pop a fresh apple sim and set up a TMO account? Or will I have to go through an unlock process (never done it before)
