I’m a current iPhone 7 owner who will be upgrading to the refreshed iPhone X here in the next few weeks when they are officially announced and released.

I currently have service through AT&T and checked my account, and I had a $38 balance on my iPhone 7 that I paid off. Based on some Googling, I won’t be able to get my phone unlocked for another 14 days now. Only reason I’m even trying to do so is because I think it would need to be unlocked if I try to sell it.

This is where my question comes in. When the new iPhones come out, I know at some point they sell special “unlocked versions”. Does anyone know approximately how long after the general release is that they become available?

Secondarily, I plan on buying my new iPhone outright, not throughly AT&T Next or Apple. If I do that, would I be able to request my phone to be immediately unlocked after I get it? It won’t be a big deal, but I’d rather have it unlocked right away or as soon as possible if I’m buying it outright, and I also wouldn’t have to worry about waiting for an unlocked version to be released at some point in the future.

Appreciate any and all responses. Thanks!

Sim-Free Model usually becomes available in the U.S typically after 1 month after it's initial launch.

As for your second question, If you buy it directly from Apple.com or Apple store and pay outright, then it is unlocked upon purchase. If you buy it outright at the AT&T store, I believe those still come locked and you have to request an unlock, I'm not sure if there is a wait time, last I heard is 60 days? I could be wrong on that one.
