Greetings,

I'm planning on dropping a second drive into my MacBook Pro 2011. I had an ultrabay in there and took it out a while back. My question is on encryption. Right now, I have a 400g SSD. I am going to add a 256g SSD.

Ideally, I'd have the 256 in the main slot as my boot/app drive and then the 400g as my user drive. The current 400g is encrypted with Filevault.

The main question I have is, I know I can encrypt the second drive no problem but I need to enter the password in to access the drive. Does this mean I really can't use that drive as my user folder? My gut feeling is that the password lock would mess up the OS trying to load my ~/Library folder. IF that's the case, I'll just throw some large-sized files on the second drive like my Lightroom libary.

Not with the second drive encrypted... no. The system will boot and won't be able to see the users folder since it is still locked. I would just put some of the large users subfolders like Maybe Music or Pictures or whatever on the second drive.

Thanks,

That's what I thought.
