Question on google and privacy

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but I have just been discussing my switch from iOS to android on another forum. A couple if people commented that they wouldn't want google getting access to their data.

What sort if thing should I be wary of and what might the consequences be??

Do you use gmail, maps, etc? I'm not sure what the real question is. If you upload stuff to the cloud - you're never "safe" - the internet is forever

I use Google contacts, mail, calendars, chrome etc

The comment was " I wouldn't want Google getting access to my data"

Do they sell this stuff on or something? If its just for targetted ads I can live with that.

Here are your options:


Live with it, or don't use the internet. There is no privacy on the internet. It's a big brother dream come true, and there is absolutely no way, no how around it if you like the services Google offers.

I do. I tried dumping all Google services and cracked after a month or so because everyone else sorta sucks at web services.

Spot on. Apple has the exact same info on you that Google has.
But as we know is true for a lot of people, Apple is pure and righteous, everyone else (especially Google and Samsung) are evil and soul sucking.

Its funny. Setting up my nexus I saw a check box relating to advert info. When I checked it it said I would still receive ads but just not based on what I normally look at. I figured if I was to see adverts they might at least have some interest to me!!

Privacy is not about hardware, it is all about services provided.

Google - a wealth of services, with minimal personal protection.

Apple - fairly good protection of personal details, with good (not great) services.

Yahoo - they have sold out to most everyone, should you trust them???????

Facebook - Understand that everything posted on this site is fair game

Microsoft - they are doing anything to get back in the game, but be careful.

LinkedIn - have been under the “radar”, but moving forward who knows?

Twitter - must I say more.......?

Google has the exact same policy that Apple and Microsoft, Facebook whatever has. They will pass on details about your perceived interests etc. If you google a lot of Cell Phone related stuff, hang around on sites like Android Central, iPhone sites etc Google will assume you have an interest in Cell Phones and pass on to people looking to target Cell Phone ads. The next time you visit a site with Ads on, it would be an ad about Cell Phones, not something random like Viagra.

They don't pass on any personal details about you, they even try and guess your age in your advertising profile, even though Google knows your real Date of Birth. I can't remember the exact page, but Google lets you view the page with all the details about you that they pass on.

Mine was like "Male, 30-40. Interested in Technology, Video Gaming, Photography".

That was about the extent of it.

Absolutely nothing....unless they become skynet, heres why:
1. All companies collect info, out of all the companies, Google is probably the most trustworthy
2. Apple also do this, so do FaceBook, and Twitter.
3. You probably have GMAIL and youtube anyway right?
4. They use this information to benefit you, even if they are selling it, or giving it to the government (like everyone else) hahaha sorry, just a stur, they are using it for amazing services like google now.
5. They have proved this by sueing the government over the NSA.

You have nothing to worry about, and if you did, you would having FaceBook, YouTube (google owned), a smartphone of any type (iphone included), twitter, basically having a piece of technology.

Google would be the last company to start selling your info, mate. Nothing to worry about.
