Question on hiding files?

I am new to the iMac world. I have been a life long PC user. My question is, on my old PC I could make a file hidden by right clicking on it and checking the hidden box. Is there a way to make a file hidden on a Mac? I am always working on projects that I don't want my roommates to see. They always steal my ideas and work.

There is, by adding a . at the beginning of the file name, but there is a better way:

Make an encrypted disk image.

It's possible to create hidden files but those usually belong to the system; just add a . (period) to beginning of the file name.
But.. you might have issues searching for them at a later date, they will vanish and most applications can't see them.

Another and safer way is to put your files in the home directory (ie Documents) and set your Mac to logout automatically (or manually logout). If you create multiple accounts, one for each user, each of the home directories will be inaccessible to the other user.
