Question on locking macbook

New to mac, just got my macbook. My question is: with windows you can have it ask you for a password to get windows started, can you do the same with mac?
 
Go to System Preferences --> Accounts --> Login Options (you may have to enter your administrator password in order to click on Login Options. Uncheck the "Automatically log in as:" box.
 
ok so like I said, im pretty new to macs so here is a stupid question....where do I find system preferences?
