Question on Photoshop Software

I want to buy Photoshop, but not the newest version. I just want to play around with photos. No I don't want Elements, I want Photoshop.

Now my question, which older version of photoshop is best to purchase. I've heard of other software programs that have upgraded, they were not always better.

So can someone reccomend a specific version to buy besides the newer ones.

Why don't you want to buy the latest? It seems kinda stupid to not get the latest when you need to buy something.

What do you mean by play around with photos? Elements may have all you need.
 
Buy Photoshop 7 on ebay. It is the third newest PS before CS2 and CS.

You should be fine with that. Im sure you can scoop that up for real cheap.

Are you actually going to need the newest features in CS and CS2? Prolly not so why pay the extra chunk of change if you just want to fool around and learn the software.

I jumped from PS7 PC to CS2 Mac and it looks so much better.
 
Photoshop 7 is/was the best photoshop purchase. They added so much, it was great. Go for it. CS & CS2 are just little add-ons that aren't really what made photoshop so great. IMHO

CS allows a lot more operations with an image that has 16 bits per color. Also, there are some very useful new tools in CS (like highlight/shadow for example).

Of course it is all what a person needs that really matters. Remember, what works best for one person may not suit another person. Otherwise why would we have Mozilla, Firefox, Safari, Camino and Opera among other web browsers?

No, I agree. I have Photoshop CS myself. But I was talking value-wise. Of course CS can do stuff 7 can't do. Its an upgrade. But I agree. Its all about what the person needs... But all he needs is to mess around. And for that, 7 is the best deal.

Of course a lot of old versions of Photoshop on eBay do not have clear licenses. People buy upgrades and then sell the old software even though the upgrade license doesn't allow for selling of the old version. That's why the new version is less expensive.

Of course if the person in question is a student somewhere, they can buy the Academice version of Photoshop CS2 for a rather decent price.

Of course if the person only wants to play around, why is PS Elements not good enough for them?

CS was actually rebuilt since 7, CS2 was more of an upgrade to CS but CS was initially rebuilt from 7.

As stated, depending on what you need 7 might have what you want for a good price (assuming you can find a legit license). CS added quite a few features, but CS2 actually adds a ton since CS. Adobe's site is the best place to check things out, but a lot of additions come to the 16 bit files, great for interpreting those tifs work always sends me :). They have also continually added general program support and usefulness, and I read somewhere that CS2 actually handles memory allocation more efficiently which is good.

If you are a student Adobe sells PS CS2 for $299, full version with student license, so if you see prices for PS7 on ebay for anywhere near that, just buy it legit from the source to guarantee your license and support of the product.
 
why not the GIMP? or the photoshop-gui GIMPshop?

GIMP is fine and all, but on the mac, you need an xserver. Also, I am very good with photoshop, but GIMP is just a pain to learn, everthing is mixted up, horrible UI. If you have the time to buy a book and learn the GIMP, go for it. Otherwise, Photoshop is worth it.

GIMP also can't manipulate photos like photoshop. (healing brush for instance is a must).

I know its for PC, but finding a Mac version shouldn't be too hard. This one took me 15 senconds to find.
Plus, if he gets a retail version, he could upgrade should he choose to do so. Ed. versions can't be upgraded.

Popular eBay seller key words and what they usually mean:
Sealed = "I put scotch tape on the CD-R case"
Full Version = "I made sure everything that was on the bittorrent download is on the CD-R"
Brand New = "I burned it just yesterday"
Never registered = "Of course, it's not legal so I never registered it"
Inexpensive shipping = "since there is no box or manual I just put it in a US Mail envelope."
Photo of box = "This was just there to show you what the software was. I didn't have a photo of the handwritten CD-r"

It's only sad/funny because it's so incredibly true. Quite sad and frustrating that you have to watch out for s*** like that on ebay. I realize the potential for that crap is out there, obviously, but it would be nice to shop online without having to worry about what version you are getting retail vs. bittorrent crap. Oh well....just ante-up and buy from Adobe, your best bet and my ,02
 
Photoshop 7 and 8 (CS1) do not have product activation.

Ver. 9 (CS2) does, so forget about buying a dodgy copy of that unless you want a program that stops working after 30 days.

People shouldn't be buying dodgy copies anyway, that just makes the war between the software companies and the pirates become even more intense.

I suppose my post could have been seen as a sly wink condoning piracy, but that wasn't its intention at all. Every piece of software on my machine is completely legit.

Activation is a small price to pay -- unless your work machines are not connected to the web... :(
