I just wanted to know if the phone has the old software can i just install the new 2.1 somewhere from itunes? Thank you

Maybe. Many people have reported doing that successfully. No muss, no fuss--but no more jailbreak. You'd end up with a stock Apple iPhone, just unlocked.

I've batted 1 for 3 in my attempts to do it. Twice, something mysterious went wrong, and I had to repwn the phone. Which was easy once, and a multi-hour ordeal once. So just from my own personal sample set, I'd say try it but don't be surprised if you have to repwn.

No.
Well, yes. You first upgrade to 2.1 then use quickpwn to activate/jailbreak the device.
Without using quickpwn or pwnagetool you can't activate the device.

I would recommend using Pwnagetool or Winpwn instead to create a new firmware, then unlock/activate/jailbreak etc it to make sure the phone is 100% ready to use unlocked and activated on a 2.1 software.
(There are guides to use Pwnagetool & Winpwn)

thank you guys, ill be buying this phone and well i have that pwng software to create the new firmware. So first i upgrade it and then pwng it or vice versa. Thank you

another thing to those who have unlocked.. When i download the 2.1 ispw and unzip it, it turns out to have several other files inside including three .dmg's?? is this correct doesn't the extension need to be ispw?? Thanks

You don't unzip the ispw. You let pwnagetool/winpwn do that for you ;)
Then, press shift + restore on the itunes screen after putting the iPhone in DFU mode (go find a guide, sorry, I'm not that good at explaining things)

thats good enough for me though, so ill just leave the file as is and pwnage tool would do the rest.. thanks
