Hello,
Can you please help me to understand silent mode?

I have enabled it, set allow calls from all and if I call the phone, it rings! I would have expected no ring because silent mode is enabled.

If I enable and set allow call from no one, it hangs up all incoming calls.

How does it work? As far as I read, it should silent incoming calls or?

Thanks for helping,
Daniele

Do Not Disturb is the name of feature.

My phone has 4 options under the “allow calls from” setting:
(1) everyone - all calls will come through
(2) no one - no calls will come through
(3) favorites - only contacts in your favorites will come through
(4) all contacts - any number in your contacts will come through, unknown numbers are blocked

If I use the switch on the left side to silence my phone, then it vibrates instead of ringing.

So, it does not silence calls but it does stop them to come through? Have I understood correctly?

Thanks for helping.

The provided link does a good job of explaining it.

A couple of things to note: The Silence option. If Always is not selected, yes, phone will ring while using the phone even with DnD turned on.

The Repeated Calls option. If you have a friend that will keep hammering away trying to call you, might want to turn that off as phone will eventually ring.

Allow Calls From, if you have your Contacts organized into groups, can select one of those. Or create a new group for allowing calls, so that you don't have to put everyone into Favorites, for example.

And note, with DnD enabled, all notification sounds and vibrations will be disabled, so, no calendar, reminders, mail, etc alerts.

Thanks for replying. I already have seen that page, in fact:

The confusion I had is because “With Do Not Disturb, you can silence calls, alerts, and ....” means to me not to drop the call but to make it silent.

So I would not have expected for unauthorised calls to be hanged up. Needless to say, not being English my mother language, maybe I am mistaking.

Anyway, also the Italian translation does not help me a lot to understand better.
‘Non disturbare puoi disattivare l'audio delle chiamate” means to switch off the audio of the calls not to hang them up.

Where am I mistaking? Please help me to understand better. Thnaks, daniele

Silence and DND aren't the same thing. The switch on the side of your phone activates/deactives silent/vibrate mode (depending on your settings). Calls will not be audible with that switch activated.
DND allows you to choose whether you want calls to come through (audibly) even though its activated. I have that option on at all times as I mostly just use DND overnight and if someones ringing my phone at night time its important or an emergency so I want to be woken up.
With the option off calls are sent to voicemail as the idea of DND is that you aren't bothered by notifications at all, regardless of whether they are audible or not.

Calls will not be hanged up on, just sent directly to voicemail. Depending on how you setup "Allow From", "Repeated Calls", and "Silence". In essence, DnD is similar to powering the phone off or putting into airplane mode (dead to the world) but with the luxury of allowing important people's calls to get through (or not when feature set to Nobody), while allowing you to use the full function set of your phone.

I mostly just use DND overnight and if someones ringing my phone at night time its important or an emergency so I want to be woken up.

Probably the most common use for DnD. Using the schedule option, automatically activates DnD at bed time, deactivates daylight hours. Phone will be silent through the night re: mail chime, messaging chimes, Twitter chimes, drunk friend leaving bars text chimes, etc. Only emergency calls will get through.

To this , I will add that if you have groups on your Mac they will also show . I have made a group called ICE ( In Case of Emergency and that is the one chosen for DND .
I don't think it is possible to make a group on the phone itself though you can use VIP for that .
