Currently I am using a MacBook Pro 13 inch 2020 modal with a I7 and 16GB memory and 512gb storage. PHPstorm is my bread an butter for everyday usage.

When I have 3 PHPStorm sessions open my machine goes ******* and gets quite hot. What would be a decent option. Get an existing M1 MacBook Pro or get a 14 inch M1 pro (notch)book pro ?

Any advice / experience is welcome.

Get a discounted M1 13" MBP which is as good as 16" i9 MBP but if function key is important to you then get 14" pro at a cost.

just ask anything , m1 is pretty good of tempature but don't expect 10 hours or more .. 6 hour or more if you not connecting to power plug .

You can get new macbook pro for long term and the port is good for travel and presentation .

** question ? How much monitor you link to your monitor , it may the source of heat also. the macbook struggle.

Depends on your need for multi-core performance
M1 MBP 13" = 4 perf + 4 efficiency cores
M1 Pro MBP 14" = 6 perf + 2 efficiency cores (if 8 core chosen)

However there are other differences in screen spec, hardware design (e.g. Touch Bar), battery life, weight...
Study the differences more before you decide

16" 32GB with M1 MAX, YOLO or try vscode
VScode needs the extra CPU power. It's an Electron app so it runs javascript. Large files take really long to load.

I benefited hugely from upgrading an older Intel Mac to the M1.

Still incorrect. I AM a developer, 15 hrs is possible, I get 12 hrs easily, no problem at all.
err ? seem you aren't developer since by simple default usage may varried upon developer . So a bit odd you call yourself developer not programmer / coder so on. gotcha.?

My usage test before 6 to 8 hours as travel and i forget to bring the charger. :p

I been 2 to 3 hour on normal laptop amd / intel while this m1 can bring juice to 6 to 8 hour consider as grateful and not heat at the lap .

I would say it depends largely on how much you can afford to spend and what your usage is.

If you want to save money, the M1 macbook pro with 16GB is a beast. Its also light and portable but you can only connect one monitor without a lot of faff.

The new 14" will be much more powerful but the battery life won't be quite as good and its a bit chunkier.

I'm a developer and I have just gone for the 14" with 10 core, 1TB and 32GB RAM. Should be a beast.

Just saw Dave2D review and his battery test showed 8.5hrs for the video playback at 250nits on the m1 pro 8/14. I wonder how much of impact will the 10c variant have on the variant. The battery life of the m1 is one of the best features for me.

for me , low temp and no fan noise.. my last amd a6 kinda fan 4000 rpm ++ and temp over 50 celcius (not us style) just to open microsoft word. Unacceptable :( The ryzen less heat but i sold it because to many laptop and that time awaiting m1

I can't imagine it will have much effect at all. It shouldn't be using 10 cores vs 8 just because it has them there.
