I have a POP email account set up for my business and I have turned off the push feature and set fetch for 15 minutes. My question is this......when I go to use my phone for whatever reason ( web surfing, phone call, text ) I always hit the wake / sleep button when I am done to turn the screen off. By doing that, it seems that fetching emails doesnt happen. Is that becasue I am putting the phone into a true sleep mode and it will only accept calls and text notifications???

I have experimented with sending myself emails and after 20 minutes, there is still no new mail until I actually go into the email boxes and then it connects and updates, showing the new mail in my in box. However, I just did another experimanet where I left the phone turn off on its own and in 15 minutes, my test email made the "ding" noise and showed up.

I guess hitting the sleep / wake button blocks certain things from happening and only allows calls and texts ??

Hmmm... first, it's a lock switch, not a sleep/wake button. There is no sleep state for the iPhone. The iPhone can and should receive fetch e-mail while it's locked.

In my past experience, the iPhone occasionally does stop receiving new mails, particularly it seems at times when it transitions in and out of Wifi service vs. cellular data. But that's a glitch and it's supposed to keep receiving mail, which it generally does for me (also with push off and fetch = 15 min).

Ok thanks.......I thought it was referred to as the "sleep / wake" button.

Are you sure there is no "sleep" mode? I thought i've seen it discussed on the forum before. I am new the phone ( had it for about 2 weeks ) and terminology, so I am just asking.

Back to the button.......So what you are saying is when I hit the lock button on top of the phone to make the screen go blank..........its the same as just putting the phone down after using it and the screen eventually going blank and turnig off on its own?

I guess people do call it a sleep / wake button, but that's exactly why I suggest not doing so. :p

Yes, it's essentially just like letting your phone auto-timeout, at least if you have your phone set to lock on timeout, I guess (I use a password lock, so I don't know what the behavior is like exactly without one).

Basically...

- Locking it has no effect on sending/receiving SMS, Phone calls, or e-mail. Anything in process at the time of lock finishes, and the phone continues to receive all three things while it's locked.

- Locking does not generally terminate the active program, e.g. you can put it on the camera and lock it, and upon unlock it goes right back to the camera, but as far as I can tell, most programs aside from the iPod and the iPhone pause when you lock (so for instance, if I lock at a concert in camera mode, it doesn't seem to run the battery way down because it's working the camera the whole time). I think purchased apps vary, with some, like Pandora, able to continue while you're locked and others (like games) pausing automatically. I think this comes in as an issue with the jailbreak tethering apps, because they stop when the phone times out (? -- I have not used them).

That's why I think "sleep" is a misnomer, since nothing is really being put to sleep except certain classes of active app.

Which version are you running? 2.1 has known issues with fetch... ever since I went to 2.2 I've had no problems it fetchs beautifully!

Same here, make sure you're running 2.2. Fetch is working fine so far (while Push is still baah..)

I'll do a +1 to better fetching with 2.2, I used to have all kinds of issues with it in other firmware versions, but so far so good its fetching like it should.

thanks for the input guys. I had already installed 2.2 prior to staring the thread. I do agree though that the fetch seems to work much much better now. Maybe it was due to a bug in 2.1

Thanks again !!
