Question regarding MacBook Pro Purchase

I have a question.

I have been thinking of what I should buy. I have been debating a MacBook Pro or a iMac I know the MacBook Pros don't have docking stations like the Dells have.

I did notice it does have a Monitor connector.

My question is, Can I setup my MacBook Pro where-as I plug in a monitor, keyboard and mouse and its in simple terms turned into a desktop PC?

Would I have to keep the notebok open or can I close it like the Dells can do?

How is the keyboard? I am torn between a MacBook and MacBook Pro...and honestly, little things like the quality of the keyboard is what will, ultimately, be the deciding factor.

I have owned a MacBook, so I know that the keyboard provides great tactile feel (for a laptop, that is)...I'll need to get hands on a MBP before deciding...but would like to hear from other current owners.

I have an SR mbp, and I spent a good deal of time on macbooks as well (several weeks), and personally, I like the macbook pro keyboard better. For some reason, I find that I don't need to press as hard in order to type, which is a plus for me. In addition, for some reason, the macbook keyboard left me feeling "naked," by which I mean it was hard to tell when I was nearing the end of a certain key and close to a new one.

To be fair though, the macbook keyboard didn't cause any more typos than the macbook pro keyboard, so this was entirely a psychological factor on my part. However, one big plus for the macbook pro keyboard is the fact that it's quieter. You also can't forget that cool but useless backlight.:p

What notebook/keyboard do you use now? If you ever spent time on a Thinkpad, then the mbp keyboard will be closer. If you have spent more time on the standard Dell/HP keyboards, then the macbook will probably be closer.

Keyboards are so subjective. I currently own a couple of Thinkpads...and have an X60s with me here in the mud hole. I find the MacBook and the ThinkPad keyboards to both provide great tactile feel. Dell laptop keyboards, on the other hand, are absolutely horrid! VERY flimsy (lots of flex) and very mushy to type on.

I can't wrap my head around the MBP keyboard being described as close to the Thinkpad and worlds apart from the MacBook. ;)

I know what you mean. As silly as some people find it to base a purchase decision on something as "insignificant" as keyboard feel, it can be a deal breaker for me too.

I slightly prefer the MacBook keyboard, but they're both great and both provide good feel.
 
I prefer

the feel of the Macbook Pro keyboard although I hate how old-fashioned it looks :mad:
I can't decide whether to wait for a MBP update which may not arrive at all or not.

Does portability matter to you? I think that should be deciding factor. If you need portability, then without a doubt. get the macbook pro.
 
Hey guys,

I ended up going with a MacBook Pro. Should arrive on Tuesday. really excited.

I wanted to have the ability to go mobile but on the other hand I wanted to use it as a desktop also.

I was doing this with my Dell Notebook D500 when I had it many years ago. I had docking stations and I would just dock it in and out whenever I went mobile.

I wish Apple would build a nice docking solution but as long as I can get a Monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged in, I have what I need.

I haven't seen anyone carrying around their imac around. However I have seen people carry around their MBP around. Including myself.

Wouldnt this mean that the MBP is more portable than the imac?

Sorry, I thought the debate was between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. That will teach me to read the thread more carefully! :eek:
 
Congrats on the Macbook Pro. You wont regret it. I always thnk that the MBP is portable 'relative' to the macbook and in that weight differences between the 2 is quite negligible but there is considerable difference in screen real estate and processing power.

I've never owned an external keyboard, although when I tried out the new Apple slim-form keyboard, I couldn't help but feel I was a lot slower, the gaps between keys meant I had to keep looking down the check I was on the right key, this could just be me though.
I very much like the MBP keyboard it just, I don't particularly like how it looks (plasticy) and I'm sure the colour's different to the machine itself.
Probably me being picky though :rolleyes:
I feel that for something as well-defined as the macbook pro, those concave keys just don't.. work.
