Question Regarding "Restore"

I am thinking of restoring my iPhone 3G (non jailbroken) to factory setting and lend it to my friend, but I have one concern.

Will I be able to "restore" the phone back to its current settings/configurations with all the SMS, Notes, and iTunes playlists intact and unmodified through the back up file created by iTunes when I get my iPhone back?

iTunes playlists aren't contained in the backup file, but since they're on your computer they will just be synced back to the phone. SMS, notes, and settings are in the backup file and will be restored when you use the backup.
