If one is updating a JB 2.1 to 2.2, the process is:

update to 2.2 via iTunes
quickpwn 2.2
re-download all apps from Cydia.

There is no way to restore the phone's apps downloaded via Cydia like apps via the Appstore, right?

I was able to do this:

1. update to 2.2 via iTunes - through RESTORE function under Summary tab
2. Once restored to the latest firmware, select a previous BACKUP to restore, this will bring back the previous settings such as mail, calendar etc.
3. Install quickpwn 2.2
4. re-download all apps from Cydia.

Not quiet simple as you mentioned. You will loose all your music too so you'll have to resync everything back which is typically not a problem but My phone is married to my desktop and I'm travelling on Geavy now so I'll have to wait till I get back.

Is there a way to just update the baseband?

MuscleNerd kept hinting at a way to do so in his comments on the dev-team's blog...

but why would you want to upgrade just the baseband?

doesnt upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2 upgrade the baseband which means there is no way to unlock the 3g phone in the future?
